Just this evening Bryce and I went to visit his Mom and we went out to get dessert and a movie. After spending quite a bit of time in the movie store, we finally chanced upon Ben Stiller's new movie "The Heartbreak Kid". A romantic comedy...ok...we thought.
BIG MISTAKE
Besides the unnecessary profanity, graphic sex scenes and overall crude humor, this movie appeared to have a very dark motive or motives to it.
Here is the quickest synopsis I can put together.
Ben Stiller is a longtime bachelor who finally meets who he thinks is the right girl. After only six weeks of know her they get married. On their honeymoon she seemingly changes and is portrayed as a maniac/liar. Stiller's character starts having huge misgivings about his prompt marriage and goes off to a drink at the bar, where he meets Miranda (Michelle Monahgan) whom he makes a connection with immediately. Within a couple days he falls in love with her and her family who are all their to watch their parents renew their vows. As more obscene things happen and misunderstandings, he eventually breaks the news to his wife that it is working out; Miranda finds out he has been lying all this time and takes off with the rest of her family to go back home. Still desperately trying to win Miranda follows her (after many attempts to cross the border without a passport) to Mississippi only to find she has gotten married prematurely. In short he gives up, loses his business in the divorce and moves to Cabo (where he had his honeymoon) and starts a business there. Soon after Miranda comes to find him and she has conveniently ended her marriage as well. After they 'makeup' and she asks him to drinks later and walks off, a female voice chimes in 'honey who was that?'. Turns out, he's made the same mistake again, and has married another woman (Eva Longoria). He tells her it is some business aquaintance or something along those lines and says he will be back late this evening. She complains because it is their first year wedding anniversary! But, she agrees to have a late dinner with him. His ending line is one of frustration saying "Fuck me...".
THE END.
Although this was a terribly acted movie and had a terrible ending, it ironically said a lot (in an exaggerated way) about relationships, marriage and the consequences of moving too fast.
What popped into my mind first and foremost was...
"People have a tendency to repeat the same pattern"
AND
"Some people NEVER change"
Stiller's character is an example of these two statements. I was shocked by the ending but also intrigued. Maybe the Farrelly brothers were trying to saying something more than what was on the surface of the movie.
If people go through life and relationships without taking a good look at themselves, their family background and their patterns as well as their potential spouses' they can put themselves in unbelievable danger. And more often than not, they repeat those patterns that are in their family or have originated with themselves.
I need to reflect on this movie more, so this will be broken up into atleast two blogs, maybe more, but for now...Give it some thought. Heck...why not watch it yourself? And see what you think...
